Replanting Mpingo

Replanting Mpingo Product details

Product by:
African Blackwood Conservation Project (ABCP)

One essential aim of the Conservation Project is replanting mpingo, reintroducing mpingo seedlings which have been grown in a nursery back into their natural home in Tanzania. The core of our replanting efforts for mpingo is the Moshi Mpingo Plot, which Sebastian calls the "heart of our project."

The project began on donated land in the mid-1990s at Kiyungi, a village near Moshi, Tanzania, on the semi-arid plain at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Sebastian lives at too high an altitude for cold-sensitive mpingo to grow. Moshi, at 813 meters (2667 feet), is 11 miles south of Sebastian's home and climatically ideal for the species, providing ideal growing conditions for mpingo seedlings.
